Zach Wilson led the backup team of the Denver Broncos to a commanding 38-12 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in an exciting preseason finale. This victory increased competition for the backup quarterback spot while also showcasing the depth of the Broncos.
Wilson vs. Stidham: A Contender for the Reserve Position
Coach Sean Payton was faced with a difficult choice after seeing outstanding performances from both Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham. While expressing his satisfaction with each of the three quarterbacks, Payton suggested that he would prefer to have them all on the team.
Wilson, who was formerly selected by the Jets with the second overall pick in 2021, showed his maturity and experience by completing 16 of 25 throws for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Throughout the game, it was clear that he was able to make accurate throws and move quickly in the pocket.
Stidham led the offense to a touchdown on the Broncos’ first possession, which further contributed to their success. He demonstrated his effectiveness and capability by completing two of four throws for 28 yards.
Tune and Ridder Have Difficulties
Desmond Ridder and Clayton Tune are competing for Kyler Murray’s backup spot with the Cardinals. But in this game, the quarterbacks encountered difficulties. The Cardinals’ quarterback dilemma was made worse when Tune threw an interception and Ridder departed the game hurt.
Extraordinary feats outside of the QBs
Other players made some outstanding contributions to the game as well. The Broncos’ first touchdown was scored by Audric Estime, and Brandon Johnson made an incredible touchdown reception on a ball from Wilson.
Kedron Smith, on the defensive end, maintained his impressive preseason play with a critical fumble recovery.
Illnesses Create a Shadow
Regrettably, there were quite a few injuries during the game. Durell Nchami suffered a ruptured hamstring, and Broncos Damarri Mathis suffered an ankle injury. Divaad Wilson, Elijah Jones, Darren Hall, and Sage Surratt all exited the game for the Cardinals because of injuries.
Broncos Gaze Forward with assurance
The Broncos end the preseason with a bang thanks to this win. Who will be Bo Nix’s backup quarterback is the biggest decision still to be made. Wilson and Stidham have both proven their ability, and Payton will be closely examining their performances.
With a skilled and potential roster, the Broncos can start the regular season with optimism, regardless of the outcome. Fans can’t wait to watch what this club can accomplish in their season opener on September 8th against the Seattle Seahawks.
