Kit Harington Reflects on ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending: “Rushed, But No Alternative”

It has been five years since the contentious finale of HBO’s grand fantasy series “Game of Thrones.” After becoming well-known for his role as Jon Snow, Kit Harington has finally moved on from Westeros and taken on other endeavors, such as HBO’s “Industry.” Though the show’s contentious finale still casts a shadow, Harington recently spoke candidly with GQ about his experience and the difficulties of wrapping up such a vast narrative.

“I was in it when everyone loved Thrones; I left and everyone hated it,” joked actor Harington, referring to the dramatic change in popular opinion about the show. The last two seasons, which departed from George R.R. Martin’s incomplete manuscript, were heavily criticized for what was seen as their hurried pacing and abrupt endings.

The mysterious Varys actor, Conleth Hill, expressed his dismay to Entertainment Weekly following the sudden death of his character in the penultimate episode. Hill remarked, “You can’t help but feel you’ve failed in some way,” expressing what many fans had been thinking.

Harington takes this criticism head-on. He understands the sense of hurriedness that characterizes the latter act of the play. He does, however, also provide insight into the enormous endeavor that “Game of Thrones” represented.

Everybody involved suffered from the massive production, which was shot in several different places and had a large ensemble cast. When it comes to the experience’s weight, Harington says it himself: “I look at pictures of myself from that last season, and I look exhausted.” I was worn out. I’m done playing for the season.”

Though he challenges its viability, he concedes that giving the show several more seasons could have solved the pace problems. “I think if there was any flaw with the ending of Thrones, it was that we were all too exhausted; we couldn’t go on any longer,” Harington said. Therefore, I can see why some people believe it was hurried, and I can also agree with them. However, I doubt there was a better option.”

The world of Westeros endures despite the ending’s conflicting reviews. Positive reviews have been given to the prequel series “House of the Dragon,” which is scheduled for several more seasons. Another prequel, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” will also debut in 2025.

Regarding Kit Harington, he appears happy to move on from Jon Snow and pursue new endeavors. Though opinions on the “Game of Thrones” finale are still divided, Harington’s observations provide insightful information on the difficulties and nuances of wrapping up a major cultural phenomenon.
